Examinations and diagnostics – Diadenta dental clinic in Vilnius

Accurate diagnosis is one of the most important stages of dental treatment. During a clinical examination, the dentist can assess much of the oral condition, but not all structures can be seen directly.

For this reason, additional radiological examinations are necessary in certain situations. These help to more accurately assess the condition of the teeth, roots, jawbone, and surrounding anatomical structures, determine the extent of the problem, and plan the most appropriate treatment.

The following are performed at the “Diadenta” clinic:

  • dental X-rays;
  • panoramic X-rays;
  • lateral cephalometric X-rays;
  • computed tomography.

The dentist selects the specific examination based on the patient’s condition, the planned treatment, and the question that needs to be answered.

When might X-rays be necessary?

X-ray diagnostics can help:

  • detect cavities between teeth or under fillings;
  • assess the condition of the tooth roots and root canals;
  • assess the level of bone around the teeth;
  • determine the position of impacted or unerupted teeth;
  • assess the jawbone prior to implantation;
  • determine the relationship between the teeth and the jawbones prior to orthodontic treatment;
  • assess inflammatory or other changes around the tooth root;
  • plan more complex surgical procedures.

X-rays are not taken routinely without a clear clinical need. The type of X-ray and the frequency of its use depend on the clinical situation.

Frequently asked questions

No. X-ray examinations are not performed purely as a routine without a clear need. The type and frequency depend on the clinical situation, and the final decision is made by the dentist.

A panoramic X-ray gives a two-dimensional image in which some structures may overlap. Computed tomography provides three-dimensional information, which is especially important when planning implants or a more complex tooth extraction.

Digital X-ray equipment makes it possible to obtain the image needed for diagnosis using an optimised radiation dose. An examination is carried out only when its diagnostic benefit is justified.

Capturing the image itself usually takes very little time: a dental X-ray takes a few moments, while for a panoramic, cephalometric or CT scan you need to stay still for a short time.

Most examinations require no special preparation. You may be asked to remove glasses, earrings, necklaces, removable dentures or other metal objects in the head and neck area. Always tell the dentist if you are or may be pregnant.
